    How to Establish the Truth

HOW can we ESTABLISH the TRUTH?

God has not left us to guess whether certain things are right or wrong.

Three connected parts are necessary to establish the truth.

    1. OBJECTIVE – separate from any personal feelings, situations, or opinions
                 (Deuteronomy 32:4, Psalms 18:30-31)
    2. UNIVERSAL – applies to all people in all places
                 (Psalms 103:19, Psalms 97:5)
    3. CONSTANT - does not change with time…
                (Isaiah 40:28, Ecclesiastes 3:14)

The Source of Truth can be found in only in God!

    John 14:6

There are basic elements of truth that can always be counted on no matter what I feel, no matter where I am, and no matter what my age!

Lent - Mardi Gras Tuesday - Ash Wednesday - Self Denial - Fish - Easter - Gospel Story

LENT(Old English for Spring) is a 40-day period (before Easter, excluding Sundays) of fasting and repentance culminating in the celebration of Holy Week. LENT began by early Christians in an effort to identify with biblical 40 day periods of trial and fasting(Genesis 7:12, Exodus 34:28, Numbers 13:25, Numbers 14:34, 1 Samuel 17:16, 1 Kings 19:8, Luke 4:2, Acts 1:3)leading up to Easter. The Lenten season beacons us to deepen our understanding and appreciation for the abundant grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ's saving work on the cross.

MARDI GRAS Pre-Lenten celebrations (Carnival, Festival)culminate with FAT TUESDAY(Mardi Gras in French or Shrove Tuesday)the day before Ash Wednesday. Since Christians have often chosen or been taught to fast from all sweet food during Lent, including milk, eggs, and meat, the traditional dinner on this night is pancakes to use up their milk and eggs and syrup so there won't be any of the tempting stuff around during Lent. Many have mutated this season as an excuse for indulgence before the fast. It is often looked on as one last “binge” before having to give something up for 40 days. These celebrations foster the unscriptural notion that you can do whatever you want on Fat Tuesday, as long as you show up in church on Ash Wednesday.

ASH WEDNESDAYbegins the Lenten season and is six and a half weeks before Easter every year. Ash Wednesday isthe tradition (not a requirement)of putting ashes on the forehead in the form of a cross as a sign of humility and recognition of our own sin (the ashes usually come from the dried and burned palms from Palm Sunday the year before). "From dust you came, and to dust you shall return. Turn from your sin and receive the good news." By reminding ourselves of our need and willfully submitting to Christ's authority, we prepare our heart to celebrate Easter with a renewed sense of joy and amazement!

Many equate LENT with SELF DENIALand give up something enjoyable (like meat or chocolate or movies)for the 40 days as a way of focusing more intently on the meaning of the season. While there is certainly nothing wrong with preparing for Easter through some form of self-denial or intentional good works, it is important to realize that these will not win us God's favor, earn special blessing, or increase His love for us. God’s love for us could not be any greater than it already is! If you plan to give up something, please make sure to use the margin created to grow in love and appreciation with Christ. Remember the Lenten season is about preparing the heart; so, if you plan to give up something, then make plans to REPLACE it with something that would turn your heart more toward Christ! Maybe take the challenge to read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), memorize certain scriptures, or read the Purpose Driven Life daily devotional book during Lent. (free YouVersion Bible App for reading plans & FighterVerse App for scripture memory)

FISH Catholic traditions often practice various acts of penitence and spiritual self-discipline during Lent. One of those disciplines is a fast that requires Catholics to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. The rule is based on the authority of the Church, not on the authority of Scripture. The stated reason for Catholics not being allowed to eat meat on Fridays during Lent is to remind the faithful that Jesus died on a Friday. Jesus gave up His body (His flesh), and Catholics, in an effort to attain greater communion with Christ, refrain from consuming flesh.

EASTER  Christians celebrate Easter as the resurrection of Christ on the third day after His crucifixion. It is the oldest Christian holiday and the most important day of the church year because of the significance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the events upon which Christianity is based(1 Corinthians 15:3-4,14). The four Gospels make it clear that Jesus was crucified in conjunction with the Jewish Passover (Matthew 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-15; John 18:28,39; 19:14). The four Gospels also make it clear that Jesus was raised from the dead three days later, on the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1,19). Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Whether we call it “Easter” or “Resurrection Sunday,” what is important is the reason for our celebration, which is that Christ is alive, making it possible for us to have eternal life (Romans 6:4)!

GOSPEL STORY[BAD NEWS]Since SIN is any thought, attitude, word, or action that falls short of God’s perfect, holy standard and deserves punishment, we are separated from the Source of LIFE and we ALL desperately need RESCUED! [GOOD NEWS]Love motivated Jesus Christ to step out of heaven and sacrificially give His innocent life on a bloody cross for the just punishment of our sin and also conquer sin’s penalty (death) by victoriously rising from the grave! [Romans 10:9-10][Ephesians 2:8-9]To reject this Gospel story is to condemn your self to death. To receive this Gospel story for your own is embracing LIFE!

    Love and Respect

    Ephesians 5:33
Let each one of you LOVE his wife as himself,
and let the wife see that she RESPECTS her husband.

The Language of Love & Respect
Cracking the Communication Code with Your Mate
    Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

MEN: How to Spell LOVE to Your Wife? COUPLE

Closeness: She wants you to be close.

Openness: She wants you to open up to her.

Understanding: Don’t try to fix her; just listen.

Peacemaking: She wants you to say, “I’m sorry.”

Loyalty: She needs to know you’re committed.

Esteem: She wants you to honor and cherish her.

MEN:  You don’t motivate your wife to become more respectful by acting in unloving ways.  [Tony Evans] The less a woman feels appreciated, needed, and valued as an equal with you, the less responsive she will be following your functional lead as head in your house.

LADIES: How to Spell RESPECT to Your Husband? CHAIRS

Conquest: Appreciate his desire to work and achieve.

Hierarchy: Appreciate his desire to protect and provide.

Authority: Appreciate his desire to serve and to lead.

Insight: Appreciate his desire to analyze and counsel.

Relationship: Appreciate his desire for shoulder-to-shoulder friendship.

Sexuality: Appreciate his desire for sexual intimacy.

LADIES: You don’t motivate your husband to become more loving by complaining and criticizing to get what you want.  The less a man feels respected, the less motivated he will be to want to treat you well, love you, and be good to you.

[got ?'s quote] God’s commands for husbands and wives are not conditional. Submission is not contingent upon love, and love is not contingent upon respect. Taking the first step in obedience, regardless of the actions of the other, goes a long way to breaking down the conflict and establishing new patterns of behavior.

LADIES: What would you think of a man that is consumed with CHRIST and empowered to LOVE you and your family with the self-sacrificial love of Christ?

MEN:  What would you think of a lady that is consumed with CHRIST and honors your position as husband with endless respect?

Amazing how a proverb can contain so many nuggets of wisdom. Reading it in several translations, God's Spirit seemed to bring to light several themes today... Honesty gives confidence, so always go back to the Truth and draw strength from it. In looking for government leadership, look and evaluate for "a leader of real understanding" and not just rhetoric. Don't turn blind eyes to the poor and needy... whether it is someone I pass by or comes across my face by following the hurricane. Seek justice even when no one else agrees or understands it... time will expose the Truth (and sometimes people are just in it for the debate.) Constantly practice listening to God and renew trust Him... "He who begin a good work in you will be faithful to complete it."

"Like a roaring lion and a rushing bear Is a wicked ruler over a poor people." - Proverbs 28:15

Those who have their entire lives centered around the "here and now" are poor. Because they are either working for what they have or wallowing in what they don't. Either way, their lives revolve around "...where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19)

The ruler of this world, Satan...is looking around for those he can devour.

"Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

Therefore, take charge of our "Invite and Invest" for Sundays! Realize that there are people who are being trampled by the enemy daily and need a stronghold to cling to. I don't know how I could handle life without Christ Jesus...so why do we let others try it?

"Without Him I would be dying. Without Him I’d be enslaved. Without Him life would be worthless. But with Jesus thank God I’m saved!"

26 If you think you know it all, you're a fool for sure;
real survivors learn wisdom from others." the Msg

Thank God for great friends who share wisdom!

2 When the country is in chaos,
everybody has a plan to fix it—
But it takes a leader of real understanding
to straighten things out." the Message

Today we learned in order to fix a heart issue you can't simply just have a plan to fix your behavior...you have to get to the root of the issue. I pray I won't continue to gloss over and have a quick- fix only at the surface level towards my struggles. But instead, have the courage to dig those roots up to begin the process of a forever change in my heart....which will overflow into my life, ultimately showing God's love to others...the whole point of my life.

Proverbs 29

There is far reaching impact on others when the leader participates in gossip. (vr12) "When a leader listens to malicious gossip, all the workers get infected with evil." We are responsible for what we let in as much as what goes out.

(vrs18) Constantly seek the Lord and cast vision to accomplish His plans and purposes.

(vr25) The fear of human opinion disables (leading you around like a bull with a nose ring) ;trusting in God protects you from that.
5 Joshua Abel - Mon, August 29, 2011 @ 10:06 PM

"When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked man rules, people groan." - Proverbs 29:2

What is OUR church culture and what would WE each do to rejoice in it?

Righteousness Increasing?

- are we honest at church or do we think of things to share and hold back because of fear? "The fear of man brings a snare, But he who trusts in the LORD will be exalted. - Proverbs 29:25"

- are we giving the "church answers" and leave putting into action the things of the world?

- are we coming to church to glorify God, or do we look at elements of church as they pertain to our needs, preferences, and likes?

- can we confess our sins to one another because: 1) there is trust and commonality in that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23) and 2) we model Christ's love and forgiveness of sin. "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

- do we add numbers just to be bigger? Quality? Quantity? or Both? ""For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His." - 2 Chronicles 16:9 I say both!

The Lord has started a wonderful and exciting adventure with us at Northshore Family. Stay charged, stay engaged, stay plugged-in! We will see His glory!

""For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay." - Habakkuk 2:3

"Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary." - Galatians 6:9

25 The fear of human opinion disables;
trusting in God protects you from that. " the Message

I shouldn't worry or even care what others' opinions are regarding me. I would only care what they think because I'm getting self worth for myself from their approval. I should only seek approval from God to glorify Him. Why would I seek it from anyone other than Him anyway, when He is the only One who is worthy of living for and 2) He is the only One who will never fail me? He keeps me safe. So comforting!

Proverbs 29:1 MSG - "For people who hate discipline and only get more stubborn, There'll come a day when life tumbles in and they break, but by then it'll be too late to help them."

Ezekiel 36:26 MSG - "I'll give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you. I'll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that's God-willed, not self-willed."

Having a heart that's moldable and shapable prevents breaking. The only way a rock or stone changes shape is to break. Which heart do you have?

Proverbs 30
Bless Your Name! Thank you for welcoming me to run into your arms. Your promises are true and bring life! God, help me learn to think wisely like Solomon. It's not enough to memorize all the lists of wise sayings and behaviors. You taught him to notice and apply traits of wisdom not only from destroyers of wisdom, but also from the wiring of the simplest creatures around us. Attract my eyes and ears to wisdom in action. Strengthen me to timely respond in word and action with Your grace to the people and situations I encounter today. In Jesus Name.
9 Rebecca Abel - Tue, August 30, 2011 @ 3:33 PM

I am loving all the comments! The church truly is a body, because I haven't thought of everything you all have when I read Proverbs, but appreciate so much you sharing so I can learn even more.

"14 Don't be greedy,
merciless and cruel as wolves,
Tearing into the poor and feasting on them,
shredding the needy to pieces only to discard them." The Message

I think one thing to glean from this verse is not tear others down to elevate yourself. The only place I should seek confidence in is God, and He surely gives me more than enough - He died just for me. I am very loved by Him, so I shouldn't be greedy, merciless, and cruel to others just to feel powerful. God's powerful love is ALL I need to fill me up.
10 Joshua Abel - Tue, August 30, 2011 @ 11:54 PM

Proverbs 30:5

"Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." (NASB)

"The believer replied, "Every promise of God proves true; he protects everyone who runs to him for help." (The Message)

"Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." (HCSB)

"Every word of God is tried and purified; He is a shield to those who trust and take refuge in Him." (AMP)

"“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him." (NIV)

""Every word of God is true. He guards those who come to him for safety." (NCV)

"Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection." (NLT)

My mind goes to the hymn...

"Have faith in God, He's on his throne; Have faith in God, He watches o'er His own; He cannot fail, He must prevail; Have faith in God, have faith in God."
11 Pastor - Wed, August 31, 2011 @ 6:42 AM

Proverbs 31:8-9, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of those who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Isaiah 1:17, "Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow."

On Mission... need to keep my eyes fresh and open for those who need someone else to notice they need a hand today.

Godly Wife... blessed and thankful for a mate that is pursuing God... on mission in the work place to open up ministry opportunity.
12 Pastor - Thu, September 1, 2011 @ 6:51 AM

Proverbs 1 Lord, give me a heart to pursue Your wisdom...James 1:5 Your Word breeds LIFE! Spirit fill me with understanding and overflow my lips with the Truth. Empower me to choose and lead wisely. Give my family and my church an appetite for Your wisdom so that we can be full on mission for Your glory. In Jesus Name
13 Rebecca Abel - Thu, September 1, 2011 @ 9:56 PM

7 Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing down to God;
only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning." proverbs 1:7

I need a humble heart...I can't do life alone, and certainly need eve bit of God's wisdom.
14 Pastor - Fri, September 2, 2011 @ 9:53 AM

It's Friday... Proverbs 2 contains some amazing encouragement to pursue Godly wisdom... for those that consistently seek His wisdom, here are some of the overflow rewards mentioned in the chapter... Truth, answers to questions, adventure, victory, protection, pure thoughts and words, common sense, wise choices, connection with the Spirit's leading, strength, light, straight paths, peace, power to overcome temptation, joy, legacy, LIFE.

"For wisdom will enter your HEART, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul."
15 Joshua Abel - Sat, September 3, 2011 @ 2:39 AM

"Do not be afraid of sudden fear Nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; For the LORD will be your confidence And will keep your foot from being caught." - Proverbs 3:25-26

"For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11
16 Pastor - Sat, September 3, 2011 @ 11:14 AM

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your HEART and lean no on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

How easily we let the enemy gain victory over areas of our heart when we do not diligently and consistently seek to surrender all access to the Spirit's control.

..."the Lord be your confidence."

..."do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when you have the power to act."

...[He] gives grace to the humble."
